Hikers bluff charged by black bear on Fairy Creek Trail Fernie

August 15.  Two hikers were bluff charged by a black bear on the Fairy Creek/Mount Proctor trail about 20 minutes past the falls.  This is typical defensive behavior when bears are surprised at close range.  Remember to make noise (talk, sing or clap) to warn bears of your presence, travel in groups during daylight, carry bear spray and do not litter.

To learn more about preventing and handling encounters with bears view the movie Staying Safe in Bear Country, available at the Fernie and Elkford Chambers of Commerce and the Fernie library.
