A black bear had to be killed at Fernie Alpine Resort last weekend. The bear had been in the area for a while accessing garbage, humming birdfeeders and BBQ’s on decks and backyards on Timberline Crescent and Highline Drive. This bear became bolder and was reported looking for food in backpacks at the aerial park, climbing 2 flights of stairs trying to push through a door to enter a home and also was on the deck trying to enter the Griz inn via the side door by the restaurant. The bear had to be killed on scene at the base area at F.A.R. as he posed a threat to human safety.
Bear Aware and the Conservation Officer Service visited area residents to provide education on the importance of securing bear attractants (garbage, humingbird feeders and BBQ’s) and met with bike park management.
